What My Crew Repairs in Clarkston

Soft Ice Cream in the Freezer Door

The ice cream in the door shelf is soft again, or it has turned grainy and icy. The freezer isn't necessarily failing. Door shelves are the warmest spot in any freezer. They swing out into the kitchen every time someone opens the door, and they sit farthest from the vents that blow cold air.

Ice cream is fussy about that. Each time it softens a little and refreezes, the small ice crystals grow, and the texture turns coarse. Frozen meat and fish lose quality the same way.

A better layout:

Here's a quick test. If ice cream at the very back is soft too, the freezer itself is warm. Put an appliance thermometer in the middle of the freezer overnight; it should read 0°F or close to it. A higher reading, frost on the back panel, a fan you can't hear, or a fridge section that's warming as well all point to a repair. My techs will check the fan, the defrost parts and the sealed system.

Food Browning on Top? Wait for the Preheat Signal

The cookies come out dark on top and doughy in the middle. Before you blame the oven, think about when they went in.

Many electric ovens use both the bake element at the bottom and the broil element at the top to preheat faster. Slide a tray in before the oven says it's ready, and the top element may still be heating, so the tops brown quickly while the inside lags behind. Wait for the preheat tone or the indicator before the food goes in. Some ovens also offer a fast preheat setting that leans harder on the top heat, so read the manual if yours does.

Other common reasons for dark tops:

If the tops still burn after a full preheat, with the rack in the middle and bake selected, the broil element may be staying on during bake. A stuck relay or a control fault can do that, and my techs can test for it.

Gas Ovens Brown Differently

A gas oven usually bakes with a single burner under the oven floor and broils with a separate burner at the top, or in a drawer underneath on some older ranges. The top burner stays off during preheat and bake, so early loading is rarely the reason for dark tops in a gas oven. On gas, pale tops and dark bottoms are the more familiar pattern. Moving the rack up one level, or switching to a lighter pan, usually evens things out. If one side of a tray always burns, the burner flame may be uneven, and that's worth a look.

How Hank's Crew Runs a Clarkston Visit

We talk: you call or send the form. A person answers 24/7 and sets a same- or next-day visit.

We look: the tech checks power, water, gas and settings, tests the parts linked to the symptom, and tells you what's wrong.

We fix: with your agreement, the tech installs genuine or OEM-approved parts and runs the appliance before leaving. Your warranty runs up to 6 months and takes in both the parts and the labor.

Why a Glass-Top Element Blinks Off on High

You turn a burner on a smooth glass cooktop to high. It glows bright red, goes dark for a while, then glows again. Many people think the element is failing. Usually it's working exactly as designed.

Warped or ridged pan bottoms.

Heat bounces back into the glass instead of going into the pan.

A pan smaller than the ring

On the cooktop, or no pan at all.

An empty pan left on high.

It heats quickly, and so does the glass under it.

Very thin cookware.

Flat, heavy-bottomed pans that match the ring size work best.

The element never glows at all.

Only one ring of a dual element lights up.

It cycles off so often that water won't come to a boil in a flat pan.

It stays on after you turn the knob off.

Every radiant element under the glass has a temperature limiter. When the glass gets too hot, the limiter switches the element off for a short time to protect the cooktop, then lets it back on. At lower settings the control also pulses the power on purpose. That's how a radiant element gives you a gentle simmer.

Things that make the cycling worse:

Clarkston FAQ — Hank's Answers

? Is my Clarkston apartment covered?

If it's in 30021, yes. For any other ZIP code, the form tells you in seconds.

? How soon can a tech come to Clarkston?

Same- or next-day visits are available in Clarkston. A call early in the day leaves more times to choose.

? Why is ice cream soft in my freezer door?

The door is the warmest part of the freezer. Move the ice cream to the back of the main compartment.

? What temperature should my freezer be?

0°F, or very close to it. Check with an appliance thermometer placed in the middle overnight.

? My glass-top burner turns off and on by itself. Is it broken?

Usually not. A limiter switches it off briefly to protect the glass. If it never glows, or one ring stays dark, call us.

? Which pans work best on a glass cooktop?

Flat, heavy-bottomed pans that match the size of the ring.

? Why do my cookies burn on top?

They may be going in before preheat ends, while the top element is still on. Wait for the signal and use the middle rack.

? How long is a Clarkston repair warrantied?

Up to 6 months on the part and the labor.
