What My Crew Fixes in Riverdale

Fog Between the Panes of the Oven Door

Look through the oven window and everything looks hazy, streaked or brown, and no amount of wiping helps. That's because the film isn't on the outside. Most oven doors are built from two or more layers of glass with an air gap between them, and over the years steam and grease vapor creep into that gap and bake on.

It's mostly a looks problem, and the oven usually cooks fine. Here's how to handle it without breaking anything:

When is it more than cosmetic? A crack in any pane, a door that no longer closes tight, or heat you can feel around the edges of a closed door. Stop baking with a cracked inner pane and call; that glass takes the most heat. A door that doesn't seal also lets heat escape, so food bakes slowly and unevenly.

An Ice Maker That Fills but Never Dumps

You open the freezer and find the ice maker tray full of frozen cubes, but the bin underneath is empty. The water side is working. The harvest side isn't.

Most ice makers won't empty the tray until they sense the cubes are frozen solid. Then they warm the tray slightly to loosen the cubes, and an arm or a twist of the tray drops them into the bin. When that never happens, look at these first:

If the freezer reads 0°F, the bin is seated and the arm moves easily, but the tray still never empties, the ice maker unit or its heater has likely failed. My techs test it in place before replacing anything.

Dispenser Won't Pour? Check the Lock Before Anything Else

A refrigerator dispenser that does nothing when you press the paddle is often locked, not broken. Many fridges have a lock button on the dispenser panel to keep kids from playing with the water. Press it once by accident, maybe while wiping the panel, and the dispenser goes quiet. On most models you press and hold the lock button for a few seconds to release it; the manual tells you exactly how.

If it isn't locked, try these:

A dispenser that drips, sputters or pours very slowly after all of that may have air or a blockage in the line, or a failing valve. My techs can trace which one it is.

Cold First Glass, Warm Third Glass

Here's one that isn't a fault at all. Many refrigerators keep a small water tank inside the fresh-food section, so the water can chill before it reaches the dispenser. Pour one glass and it comes out cold. Pour four in a row for a pitcher, and the tank empties faster than it can cool the water that refills it, so the last glass comes out close to tap temperature. Give it an hour and the next glass is cold again. If even the first glass after a quiet night is warm, the fresh-food section itself may be running warm, and that's worth a thermometer check.

Riverdale FAQ — Hank Answers

Yes, 30274 and 30296 are both on our map.

? How soon can a tech come to Riverdale?

Same- or next-day visits are available in Riverdale. Call in the morning for the widest choice of times.

? Can I take my oven door apart to clean between the glass?

Only if your manual says the door is made to come apart. The hinges are spring-loaded, so follow the steps exactly or leave it to us.

The freezer may be too warm, the shut-off arm may be blocked, or the ice maker unit has failed. Check the freezer temperature first.
