Hank's Crew Fixes Appliances in Lithonia, GA

Lithonia's name comes from the Greek word for stone, and this DeKalb County town spent generations quarrying granite. You can still see that rock on Arabia Mountain, a short drive south, and on plenty of kitchen counters around town. Hank here. Stone Counters and Snug Alcoves: Let the Fridge Breathe

Granite counters and tall cabinets give a kitchen a built-in look. The catch is that most refrigerators are not built-ins. A standard freestanding fridge sheds the heat it pulls out of your food through its condenser, and that heat needs somewhere to go. Squeeze the fridge into an alcove with no room above or behind it, and the warm air stays trapped around the cabinet.

Here's how a boxed-in fridge tends to behave:

One thing that is normal: on many models the side panels feel warm by design, since tubing that carries heat runs just inside them. Warm sides alone don't mean anything is wrong.

To give the fridge room, look up the minimum gaps at the top, back and sides in its installation guide, then pull it forward until it meets them. Older fridges with black coils on the back need the most space behind them. Newer models that breathe through the front grille are more forgiving, but only while that grille stays open. Keep the front grille clear, and don't let a decorative panel cover it. If the fridge still runs nonstop with proper space around it, a dirty condenser, a weak fan or a failing part may be behind it, and that's the moment to book us.

When the Oven Ignores the Keypad

You press Bake, and nothing happens. Before you decide the control has died, rule out three settings that make a working oven look broken:

  1. Control lock. Many ovens let you lock the keypad so children can't switch them on. A padlock symbol or the word LOCK on the display gives it away. On most models you hold one button, or a pair of buttons, for a few seconds to release it; the owner's manual names the right keys.
  2. Sabbath mode. Some ovens have a mode that keeps baking at a set temperature with the lights, beeps and most keys turned off. Switched on by accident, it can make the oven seem frozen. The manual explains how to leave it.
  3. A confused display. Turn off the oven's breaker for a full minute, then switch it back on. A short power reset can clear a control that has locked up.

If the display is blank as well as unresponsive, check the breaker and the plug before anything else; a range pushed back after cleaning can work its plug partly loose. If none of these brings the keypad back, the touchpad or the control board has probably failed. Tell us the brand and model when you book, plus anything the display shows.

Ice Frozen Into One Big Block

You press the dispenser lever and hear the motor strain, but no ice comes out. Open the bin and the cubes have welded into a single lump. A few things cause it:

Turn off the ice maker, pull the bin, and let the clump thaw in the sink. Never chip at it inside the freezer with a knife or screwdriver; it's easy to puncture a liner or a cooling line that way. Dry the bin, slide it back and switch the ice maker on. Heading away for a few weeks? Switch the ice maker off and empty the bin before you leave, so you come home to fresh cubes instead of a frozen brick. Put a thermometer in the freezer as well: it should hold close to 0°F. If clumps keep forming, or you spot icicles near the fill tube, book us to check the valve, the fill tube and the freezer's temperature.

Lithonia FAQ — Hank Answers

? Do you cover both Lithonia ZIP codes?

Yes, 30038 and 30058, including homes that sit inside Stonecrest but use a Lithonia mailing address.

? How fast can a tech reach Lithonia?

Same- or next-day visits are available. Calling early in the day leaves the widest choice of times.

? My oven won't respond to any button. Is the control board gone?

Not always. Check for the control lock and Sabbath mode, then switch off the breaker for a minute. If the keys still don't respond, book a visit.

? Why has my ice turned into one giant clump?

Ice left unused, a freezer that warmed above freezing for a while, or a leak dripping into the bin. Thaw it in the sink, never with a knife inside the freezer.

? My fridge sits in a tight granite alcove and runs all day. Is that the problem?

It may be. Check the clearances in the installation guide and keep the bottom grille open. If it still runs nonstop, have us test it.

? The sides of my refrigerator feel warm. Should I worry?

Usually not. On many models, tubing that carries heat runs inside the side panels.

? What parts do you put in?

Genuine or OEM-approved parts chosen by your model number.

? What warranty comes with a Lithonia repair?

Up to 6 months, and it covers our labor along with the parts.
