What Hank's Crew Repairs in Scottdale

No Water Line? Switch the Ice Maker Off

Plenty of refrigerators leave the store with an ice maker already inside, even when the kitchen has no water line behind the fridge. It happens in rentals, and in homes where a new fridge replaced an older one that never made ice. Left switched on, that ice maker keeps asking for water it will never get.

What you might notice:

None of that does the fridge any good. The valve and the ice maker motor wear for no reason. Your manual shows how to switch it off: on many models you lift the metal arm beside the ice maker until it clicks, flip a small switch on the ice maker, or turn off ice on the control panel.

Do the same when the water will be off for a while, such as during plumbing work or before you leave town. Turn the ice maker back on once the water returns and the line has been flushed.

When to call my crew: the valve keeps buzzing with the ice maker off, water drips behind or under the fridge, or the ice maker still won't fill after a water line goes in. Running a new line is plumbing work. Once it's connected, my techs can test the valve, the fill tube and the ice maker itself.

Beads of Water Inside the Fridge

You open the door and the glass shelves are wet, drops cling to the walls, or a little water sits under the crisper drawers. The fridge may still be cold. Most of the time, the water comes from damp air that got inside.

Where the moisture comes from:

What to do: cover food and liquids, wipe the shelves dry, and make sure the door swings shut and seals on its own. Run a hand along the gasket for tears, flat spots or a gap at the corners. Rearrange anything that keeps the door from closing.

Some refrigerators, often compact and older models, cool through the back wall of the fresh-food section. Frost forms there while the compressor runs, melts between cycles and runs down a channel to a drain. A few drops on that back wall are normal for those models.

It's a repair when water collects on the floor of the fridge, ice builds up on the back wall instead of melting off, the drops come back on dry days with the door closed, or the fridge is warm as well as wet. A blocked drain, a defrost problem, a door that sags or a torn gasket can be behind it, and my techs can track down which.

Rocking Pans and Worn Grate Feet

The pot of rice wobbles every time you stir it, and the skillet tips toward the front. Before you blame the range, lift the grate and look underneath. On many gas cooktops, each grate stands on small rubber or silicone feet. Those feet wear thin, crack from the heat, or pop off in the dishwasher or the sink, and then the grate rocks.

A rocking grate is more than an annoyance:

What to check:

Replacement feet and grates are made for each model, so use the model number from the label behind the storage drawer or on the frame by the oven door. My techs replace grates, feet, burner bases and burner heads with genuine or OEM-approved parts, and they check a cracked grate or chipped enamel that exposes bare metal while they're at it.
