A Fridge Reading 3 and a Freezer at -18? Check for Celsius

You glance at the display on the fridge door and see 3 for the fresh-food side and -18 for the freezer. It looks like a broken control. More likely, the display has been switched to Celsius. Many refrigerators with a digital panel can show either scale, and the change usually takes a button combination that's easy to hit by accident while wiping the panel or when a curious kid presses everything at once.

Here's how the numbers line up:

So a fridge reading 3 and a freezer reading -18 in Celsius are right where they should be.

How to tell and how to switch back:

If the display is set to Fahrenheit and still shows numbers that make no sense, or the thermometer disagrees with it by a wide margin, the problem could be a sensor or the control board. That's when my techs take over.

Celsius on the Oven Display, Too

Some ovens can switch scales as well. A recipe that calls for 350°F means about 177°C, and many ovens set to Celsius offer 175 or 180 instead. If you punch in a number from an American recipe and the oven refuses it, or the display shows a figure you didn't expect, look for that small C. The manual for your oven shows how to switch it back to Fahrenheit.

Oven Racks That Stick After a Cleaning Cycle

The racks used to glide. Now they scrape, squeal and catch halfway out, and pulling a hot casserole has turned into a wrestling match. The cause is often a self-clean cycle with the racks left inside.

Standard oven racks have a smooth finish that helps them slide on the side supports. The very high heat of self-clean dulls and discolors that finish, and the racks start to drag. Many owner's manuals say to take standard racks out before running self-clean, unless they are marked as safe for it. Racks with ball-bearing glides often have their own rules, so check before running the cycle.

Ways to get them moving again:

If a support on the oven wall is bent, loose or pulled out of place, or the oven door no longer clears the rack, that's a repair. My techs can straighten or replace the parts.

The Wall Switch That Turns Off Your Wine Cooler

In basements, bonus rooms and kitchen islands, some outlets are wired to a wall switch. In other rooms, only the top or bottom half of an outlet is switched, so a lamp can be turned on at the door. Plug a wine cooler, a beverage fridge or a spare freezer into one of those, and it runs fine until somebody flips the switch on the way out of the room.

The appliance shuts off without any noise or warning. A day later the wine is at room temperature, or the freezer is soft.

How to check:

The easiest fix is moving the appliance to an outlet that's always on. An electrician can also rewire the switched one. Please don't run an extension cord across the room to reach another outlet.

If the cooler is on an always-on outlet and still goes dark, the trouble is inside it: the power cord, the control board or a temperature control. That's a job for my crew.

Grayson FAQ — Answers From Hank

? Do you cover Grayson's ZIP code?

Yes, 30017 is on our map. For any other address, enter the ZIP code in the form.

? How soon can a tech get to Grayson?

Same- or next-day visits are available in Grayson. Calling in the morning leaves the most times open.

? Why does my fridge say 3 instead of 37?

The display is probably set to Celsius. 3°C is about 37°F, so the fridge is likely fine.

? How do I switch the display back to Fahrenheit?

It depends on the model, and the manual lists the buttons. Often you hold two of them for a few seconds.

? Can oven racks stay inside during self-clean?

Only if your manual says they're made for it. Otherwise take them out first, or they'll start to drag.

? What helps oven racks slide again?

A light wipe of vegetable oil on the side rails of a cool rack, if your manual allows it. A bent rack needs straightening.

? My wine cooler keeps shutting off. Could it be the outlet?

It could. Plug a lamp into the same outlet and flip nearby switches. If the lamp goes out, move the cooler.

? What warranty comes with a Grayson repair?

Up to 6 months on parts and labor alike.
