fridges with frosted chutes, jammed crushers or warm shelves.
freezers that frost up, hum loudly or lose their cold.
ice makers that clump, stall or quit making cubes.
wine coolers that buzz, rattle or drift warm.
ovens that bang, spark or never reach the setting.
gas and electric ranges with burners or elements that fail.
On a refrigerator that serves ice through the door, a small flap closes off the chute after each pour. Many flaps stay open for a few seconds so the last cubes can drop, then shut. While the flap is open, cold escapes and room air gets in. When it doesn't close all the way, warm, damp air keeps drifting into the chute. Frost forms, water drips onto the paddle, and the ice in the bucket starts to fuse into clumps.
Checks you can do:
The crusher sits in the ice bucket assembly. When you pick crushed, blades break the cubes on their way out. If the ice in the bucket has fused, from a flap left open, a short power outage or weeks without use, the auger and crusher strain or stall.
Here's what to try: take the bucket out the way your manual shows, break up or dump the clumped ice, dry the bucket, and seat it firmly back in place. Crushed mode is slower and louder than cubed, and that part is normal.
Call when the motor hums but nothing turns, the crusher grinds with an empty bucket, the flap never closes, or the chute frosts over again a day after you cleaned it.
Preheat the oven and it may tick, ping or pop for the first several minutes, and again as it cools down after dinner. Those sounds come from the metal. The oven walls, the racks and the panels around the cavity expand with heat and shrink as they cool, and they make noise doing it. Electric ovens also click softly as relays switch the elements on and off to hold temperature.
A small one you can fix yourself: a rack pushed all the way against the back wall can ping as it heats. Slide it forward a little.
Sounds that aren't normal:
A gas oven adds a sound of its own. Each time the burner lights, you may hear a quiet whoosh or a soft puff from under the oven floor, and a faint click as the valve opens or closes. That's normal. A loud bang when the burner lights, flames that roll out of the slots in the oven floor, or a burner that takes longer and longer to catch is different. Turn the oven off, let it cool and book a visit. A weak igniter or a dirty burner can delay ignition, and a late light is a bigger, louder light.
A compressor wine cooler hums and vibrates a little every time the compressor runs. Built under a counter, it can sound much louder than it is, because the cabinets around it act like a drum. Most of that noise can be tamed.
Wine stored for years also does best away from steady vibration, so a quieter cooler is better for the bottles too.
Call us if the hum gets louder week by week, the cooler clicks on and off every few minutes, a fan scrapes, or the cabinet warms up while the compressor runs nonstop.

The flap at the top of the chute is probably not closing, so damp air gets in. Clean its seal and watch it after a pour.
The ice in the bucket has likely fused. Empty the bucket, break up the clumps and seat it back firmly.
Yes. Metal expands with heat and makes those sounds. A bang, a flash or grinding is not normal.
Turn the oven off at the breaker and keep it off. Then call us to replace the element.
Level it, keep it from touching the cabinets and space out the bottles. If it still gets louder, book a check.
Up to 6 months. The labor is covered, not just the part.
