Hank's Five-Minute Freezer Checks

Before you book, give these a quick look:

  1. Power and outlet. Garage and basement freezers often sit on a GFCI outlet that trips without a sound. Push the reset button and listen for the compressor.
  2. The lid or door. A bag of peas wedged in the seal is enough to let warm air in all day. Look for frost around the opening, which is a sure sign of a leak.
  3. The thermostat dial. Knocked to "off" or the warmest notch more often than you'd think.
  4. Breathing room. A freezer boxed in by storage bins can't get rid of its heat. Pull things back a few inches.
  5. The drain plug. On a chest freezer, an open drain plug after defrosting means a puddle later.

If the freezer is warm and none of that helps, keep the lid shut and call us.

Save the Food While You Wait

The USDA numbers are simple. With the door shut, a packed freezer stays frozen for about 48 hours. A half-full one lasts about 24 hours. Pack items close together, since they keep each other cold.

When the freezer is fixed, food that still has ice crystals, or has stayed at 40°F or below, is safe to refreeze. It may lose a bit of texture, but it's safe. Anything that sat warmer for longer should go. A working freezer belongs at 0°F; slip a thermometer in to see where yours stands.

How a Mars Visit Goes

The call. You tell us the brand, whether it's an upright, a chest or the freezer side of your fridge, and what it's doing. We set a window, usually same- or next-day.

The look. The tech checks temperatures, the start parts, the fans, the condenser, the defrost system and the seal. You get the honest version of what failed and what the repair takes, before we do anything. If the freezer isn't worth saving, we'll say so.

The fix. Genuine or OEM-approved parts, a restart, and a check that the temperature is heading back down before we pack up. Parts and labor on the repair are covered by a warranty of up to 6 months.

Uprights, Chests and Everything in Between

Upright frost-free freezers work like the freezer side of a refrigerator. There's a coil behind the back panel, a fan to move the cold and an automatic defrost to keep the coil clear. Fans and defrost parts are our most common fixes on these.

Upright manual-defrost freezers have cooling coils built into the shelves. No defrost heater, so you have to clear the frost yourself now and then. When they stop cooling, we look at the compressor circuit and the thermostat first.

Chest freezers are usually manual defrost, and on most of them the condenser tubing runs inside the outer walls. So if the sides feel warm while it's running, that's normal. A warm inside, though, is not.

Freezer drawers and fridge freezers on French-door, side-by-side and top-freezer models. If the problem is the whole refrigerator, our refrigerator repair page covers that side.

Garage freezers. Georgia heat in August is brutal on a freezer. Many models are built for a limited room-temperature range, while garage-ready models handle a wider one. If yours only struggles in summer, the room may be part of the story.

The Parts That Usually Quit

Fix It or Replace It? Hank's Straight Answer

Most freezer problems are a fan, a relay, a thermostat, a defrost part or a gasket. Those are worth fixing, especially on a big upright or a built-in that's hard to replace.

Where I'd think twice: an older chest freezer with a refrigerant leak inside the wall, or a dead compressor on a small, budget unit. If that's what we find, you'll hear it from us straight, even if it means we don't do the job.

Brands We Service

We service upright, chest and built-in freezers from Frigidaire, Whirlpool, GE, Kenmore, Maytag, Electrolux, Amana, Haier, Hisense, Samsung, LG and KitchenAid, along with Sub-Zero, Liebherr, Thermador, Viking, Monogram, Marvel and U-Line, and smaller names like Danby, Summit and Magic Chef. Our techs bring years of experience with these brands.

Mars Appliance Repair is independent and family-owned. We're not affiliated with or endorsed by any freezer maker, and brand names here only show what we repair.

What's Your Freezer Doing?

Ice cream's soft, but it's still running

It's losing ground by a few degrees. Dusty condenser, tired fan or a leaky seal.

A frost wall on the back of an upright

On frost-free models, the defrost system quit. The ice keeps growing until the fan can't push air.

Frosty food and an icy rim around the door

Damp air is sneaking in. Gasket, hinge or a lid that doesn't close all the way.

Runs and runs and never stops

It can't get rid of heat fast enough. We see this all summer with dusty coils and stalled fans.

Dead quiet and getting warm

No hum, no fan, but the light works. Start relay, thermostat or control board.

Clicks every few minutes

The compressor keeps trying to start and an overload cuts it off.

Water under an upright freezer

The defrost drain is clogged, so melt water spills instead of draining to the pan.

The alarm keeps beeping

Newer freezers warn you when it's getting warm. Door shut and still beeping? Something's wrong.

Burning smell

Unplug it now and call. Don't keep a freezer running that smells scorched.

Freezer FAQ — The Stuff People Ask Hank

? How long will my food last if the freezer quit?

About 48 hours if it's full and about 24 if it's half full, as long as you keep it closed. That's straight from the USDA.

? Is it safe to refreeze thawed food?

If it still has ice crystals or stayed at 40°F or colder, yes, according to the USDA. Expect a little loss in texture.

? Why are the sides of my chest freezer hot?

That's where most chest freezers release heat, through tubing inside the walls. Warm sides are normal. A warm inside means a problem.

? My upright freezer is full of frost. Can I just defrost it?

You can, and it'll work for a while. On a frost-free model, though, heavy frost means a defrost part failed, and the ice will come back until it's replaced.

? Do you fix the freezer in my garage?

Sure do. We'll also check whether the garage is too hot or too cold for that model.

? How quickly can you come?

Same- or next-day visits are what most of metro Atlanta gets. Morning calls get the earliest slots.

? What warranty comes with your freezer work?

A warranty of up to 6 months covers both the parts and the labor on our freezer repairs.

? Do you work for the freezer brands?

No. We're an independent, family-owned company. Brand names only tell you which freezers we fix.
