Hank's Crew Fixes Appliances in Gainesville, GA

Gainesville is the county seat of Hall County and calls itself the Poultry Capital of the World. It lies along the shore of Lake Lanier, where the 1996 Summer Olympics held their rowing and kayaking races, and it is home to Brenau University and Riverside Military Academy. The city rebuilt after deadly tornadoes in 1903 and 1936; the second still ranks among the deadliest in American history. Hank here. My crew at Mars Appliance Repair fixes refrigerators, freezers, ice makers, wine coolers, ovens and ranges in Gainesville homes, with same- or next-day visits.

Thawing on the Bottom Shelf

In a town that knows its chicken, a lot of poultry comes out of the freezer every week. Where you thaw it matters to the food and to the fridge. USDA names three safe ways to thaw: in the refrigerator, in cold water, or in the microwave. The refrigerator is the slowest and the easiest to get right.

How to do it:

In a Hurry? Cold Water Works Too

For faster thawing, USDA's cold-water method works: seal the package in a leak-proof bag, sink it in cold tap water, and change the water every 30 minutes so it stays cold. Food thawed this way should be cooked right away, before it goes back in the fridge or the freezer. Never thaw poultry on the counter or in hot water.

Why it matters to the appliance: raw juice that leaks into a crisper or runs to the back of the cabinet can get into the drain at the back wall. That leads to a sour smell, water under the drawers, or a drain that freezes shut. A frozen turkey parked against the back wall can also block the air vent and leave the shelves above it too cold.

When it's a fault: the fridge needs days to thaw what should take one, the meat partly refreezes on the shelf, or the bottom of the cabinet stays wet. My techs check the air flow, the damper, the defrost drain and the temperature sensor.

After the Gas Is Turned Back On

When the gas company shuts the service off for a leak repair or a meter change, the pipes in the house fill with air. Once the gas is restored, the utility may need to relight pilots and look over the appliances. On a range with spark igniters, that leftover air can make a burner click for a while before it lights.

Lighting the range again:

Leave the house and call the gas company from outside if you smell gas that doesn't fade, hear a hiss with the knobs off, or see a flame that keeps lifting off the burner. And call my crew when the burners still won't light on the first or second click a day later, the oven igniter glows but the oven never fires, or the flame stays yellow and sooty. Those point to an igniter, a valve or a clogged burner.

Colder Isn't Better in a Deep Freezer

USDA's mark for a freezer is 0°F. Food kept at that temperature stays safe, so turning the dial all the way down rarely buys you anything. What it does do is keep the compressor running longer, push more frost onto the walls and the packages, and in a garage or a basement it can wear the freezer out sooner.

How to set it right:

When it's a fault: the freezer can't reach 0°F on its coldest setting, it runs without ever stopping, frost builds fast after a defrost, or the outside of the cabinet sweats. My techs check the gasket, the thermostat or control, the condenser, and the sealed system, and only EPA 608 certified techs handle refrigerant.
